General Information
PE- every Tuesday (Class Teacher) and Wednesday (Bolton Council PE coach) .
Reading books- these are changed weekly in line with the Essential Letters and Sounds phonics scheme. Children will receive both ebooks and hard copies. After reading please place a note in your child's reading log, this can be a general note to say if they enjoyed their book or if they have struggled with any words. Children will be rewarded for reading using the chart in our classroom. Remember that revisiting words and texts ensures letters and words become fluent. If children haven't read their books they will still change on their changing day, in line with the phonics sounds they are covering that week. The changing days are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and are noted on the front of your child's reading record. The book they read with a member of the year 1 team will be a different text.
Spellings - these are sent out every Friday and to be tested the following Friday. Spellings will also be in line with the phonics sounds your child is learning. As the class progresses we will move on to year 1 spellings. They are stuck in the front of your child's book to practise (there is space next to them), then the test will be done at the back of the book.
Homework - this is sent out on Friday along with the spellings, to be in for Wednesday. Homework will generally surround what your child has been learning about that week, partially as an assessment of what they have learnt as well as an extension to their learning.
Show and tell - your child is welcome to bring something in to show the class. We do show and tell on Tuesday's. Any trophy, medal or certificate can be shown during special mention assembly, if brought in before Friday.
Class Dojo - this is our class reward scheme. Children earn Dojo's for demonstrating good behaviour in class and following the Year 1 expectations.
Reminders
- Please label your children's clothing, shoes and accessories (where possible).
- Please make sure that any water bottles sent in contain water or juice that is ideally low sugar. There are cups available in class however, only enough for a few children who forget their water bottles. Please ensure to send your child in with a water bottle.
- For children on packed lunches, or those bringing snack, a reminder that we are a healthy school and your child should not be bringing numerous chocolate or unhealthy food items into school. Your child's snack should be a piece of fruit or healthy alternative.
Thank you.

Reading
We deliver Essential Letters and Sounds as our phonics scheme, therefore our home reading scheme links to this. ELS is a Systematic Synthetic Phonics (SSP) programme which has been validated by the Department of Education,
Reading - The reading scheme/books that we use are produced by Oxford University Press and are linked to the programme mentioned above.
Children are assigned physical books and eBooks from Oxford Owl weekly.
Children have their own individual logins to enable them to access books that have been specifically assigned to them in correspondence with their phonics learning in school. The decodable books provide opportunities to practise the letters and sounds taught that week and/or revise previously taught sounds.
Below are some examples of the range of books available:
Little Blending Books Words Sparks Project X Phonics Hero Academy Hero Academy Non-fiction Alien Adventures Traditional Tales Story Sparks and inFact
However we also have and use matched texts from Oxford Reading Tree, Rigby Rocket, Big Cat and Planet X for our intervention and guided reading schemes.
